Happy International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month! Today we are celebrating the women on our staff who help us accomplish our mission of preserving and protecting open space!

Thorwaldson played a key role in the formation of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.

Midpen is considering purchasing a 6,300-acre uplands portion of a remarkable swath of open space and agricultural land called Cloverdale Ranch, near Pescadero, from our partner Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST).

Nearly 350 species of flowering plants have been identified by volunteers in Midpen’s Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve during our annual wildflower census, which helps record the impacts of climate change on wildflowers and pollinators.

Our local Bay Area streams were once teeming with runs of steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), but today, steelhead trout are threatened and coho salmon are endangered. Midpen is in a unique position to protect these charismatic fish

Thanks to the Bay Area’s mild climate, wildflowers bloom here even in winter.

In December, the Midpen board of directors took its first public steps toward a proposed purchase of the 6,500-acre Cloverdale Ranch property, currently owned by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, by authorizing the general manager to apply to accept two significant sources of funding.
