Trilliums

Giant trillium (Karl Gohl)

The Bay Area is home to multiple species of trillium including the Pacific trillium (Trillium ovatum) and the giant trillium (Trillium chloropetalum). Beautiful and distinctive, trilliums embellish the forest floor with their large blossoms. True their name, they are a study in threes. Their three-petaled flowers appear in many shades from white and pink to a deep, blood red.

Blooming period: February to June

Habitat: Trilliums can be found in shady areas of coastal scrub, redwood forest, oak woodland and chaparral habitats, usually on moist slopes, canyon banks, and alluvial soils.

Where to find: Look for trilliums in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve, Long Ridge Open Space Preserve, Teague Hill Open Space Preserve, Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve and Windy Hill Open Space Preserve (especially Hamm's Gulch Trail).
