Tidy tips

Coastal tidytips (Layia platyglossa) (Erica Simons)

Common tidy tips (Layia platyglossa), also known as coastal tidy tips, are striking members of the sunflower family (Asteraceae), that can be easily identified by the unique, white tips of their petals. They are an important nectar source for the endangered Bay checkerspot butterfly, as well as many other insect species.

Blooming period: March to May

Habitat: Tidy tips grow in many different habitats, including open woodlands and chaparral, but they are most at home in open coastal grasslands. They can sometimes be found on serpentine soils, often in conjunction with goldfields.

Where to find: Look for these blooms in La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve, Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve and Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve.
