The Douglas iris (Iris douglasiana) is a native iris that grows in wet areas of the forest floor. Their delicate flowers range from a deep blue-purple to a cream. This iris is evergreen, and its sword-like leaves can be found growing in large clumps throughout the year.
Blooming period: February to June
Habitat: Look for the attractive blooms of the Douglas iris near streams, ponds, seeps or other wet areas of redwood forests and oak woodlands. They can grow in sunnier, drier areas near the coast where there is more fog.
Where to find: Coal Creek Open Space Preserve, La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve, Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve (especially near Horseshoe Lake) and St. Joseph's Hill Open Space Preserve.
