The Bay Area is the ancestral homeland of several indigenous nations that have been actively stewarding the Santa Cruz Mountains for thousands of years prior to European colonization. Join Docent Naturalists Kim Borick, Sarah Schoen, and Judy Sencenbaugh for a leisurely-paced hike with multiple stops along the Ipiwa and Sunny Jim trails to learn a bit about the historical and cultural background of local tribes. You’ll discover the ethnobotanical properties of plants and hear about practices in managing the resources of the landscape. This hike is appropriate for children aged 10 and older. Bring lunch to enjoy at Alpine Pond at the end of the hike.
For this activity at Skyline Ridge Preserve, meet at the Russian Ridge Parking Area on the northwest corner of the Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) and Page Mill/Alpine Road intersection (across Skyline Blvd. on the right). Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 40 minutes travel time.
