Nutmegs in California?

May 10, 2024

Long Ridge Preserve
Approximate Total Miles

While exploring the southern, less visited portion of this preserve with Docent Naturalists Frances Reneau and Nick Yatsko you’ll hear all about Torreya californica, also known as the California nutmeg. Though this local tree species is not related to the holiday spice, it is interesting in its own right. Come find out about this sparsely distributed conifer without cones and hike a bit of the famous Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail on this leisurely-paced botanical adventure. Reservations are required and will be accepted on or after April 26 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) and close May 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Where to Meet

Located at the Achistaca trail head, this pullout is just south of Hickory Oaks trail head. The trail head is on highway 9 (Big Basin Way) near the highway 35 and highway 9 intersection. If you are coming from the north on Skyline Blvd, turn right onto Highway 9-South and pullout will be on the right side in about half a mile. From the south on Skyline Blvd, turn left on CA-9 S for about half a mile.
