The Bay Area is the homeland of dozens of indigenous communities, many who stewarded and lived in the Santa Cruz Mountains for thousands of years prior to European colonization and are still here today. Join Docent Naturalists Kim Borick, Sarah Schoen, and Judy Sencenbaugh to learn about the natural materials used by indigenous Californians and ways they have managed the resources of the local landscape. This is a leisurely-paced hike with multiple stops along the Ipiwa and Sunny Jim trails; it is appropriate for children aged 10 and older. Bring lunch to enjoy at Alpine Pond at the end of the hike.
For this activity at Skyline Ridge Preserve, meet at the Russian Ridge Parking Area on the northwest corner of the Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) and Page Mill/Alpine Road intersection (across Skyline Blvd. on the right). Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 40 minutes travel time.
