All Preserves Great & Small: Los Trancos and Foothills

May 15, 2022
9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Los Trancos Preserve
Approximate Total Miles
3

Join docent naturalists Frances Reneau, Lyle Rice, and Marie-Anne Neimat for the 10th hike in the "All Preserves" series celebrating Midpen's 50th anniversary. Above Palo Alto's Foothills Nature Preserve, and across Page Mill Road from its bigger twin - Monte Bello, Los Trancos is best known for the San Andreas Fault trail. Exploration and discussion of geologic elements like rock formations, tectonic plates, and sag ponds are on the outing’s agenda. You’ll hike at a leisurely pace and enjoy features along the Nonette Hanko and Franciscan trails too. An optional stop on your own as you drive back down Page Mill Rd. is at Midpen’s Foothills Preserve for a short 0.5 mile walk to an eastern facing vista point. Stopping here will let you check this tiny preserve (Midpen’s first!) off your "All Preserves" list as the 11th hike.

Where to Meet

Meet at Los Trancos Parking Area on Page Mill Road (across from Monte Bello Preserve), 7 miles west of I-280 or 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 35 minutes travel time.
