7/11/22 UPDATE: Due to a large scale trail construction project in Coal Creek Preserve the planned hike is being reconfigured to provide short 1.5 mile loop via Crazy Pete’s and Coal Roads with an add-on short hike at nearby Russian Ridge Preserve which will occur first. You’ll get two hikes in the “All Preserves” series on one day! Please review description and directions carefully to understand these outing updates.
Participants will meet and park at a special Russian Ridge Preserve access location (Gate RR01) off of Skyline Blvd. Docent Naturalists Frances Reneau, Helena Cohen and Paul Billig will facilitate the access and lead you on a 1.0 mile out-and-back stroll to the top of Borel Hill (2,572 feet – highest elevation in San Mateo County) where docents will point out significant features of the preserve and share a little about its history. The hilltop also provides views of the second location you’ll visit next – Coal Creek Preserve.
The hike portion of this outing in Coal Creek Preserve will require a short car shuttle for participants to another trailhead and roadside parking adjacent to Crazy Pete’s Road and Skyline Blvd. Docent naturalists will discuss highlights unique to this preserve and review elements of the trail construction project.
Meet at Russian Ridge Preserve gate RR01, opposite the pull out area (CalTrans Cloud's Rest) located on Skyline Boulevard 1.2 miles north of Page Mill Road and 6 miles south of Highway 84. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 40 minutes travel time.
