3.7 Hike
Join Midpen partner, Bay Area Older Adults, for a hike of Mount Umunhum at the Sierra Azul Preserve. Participant will start the day at one of the highest peaks in the Santa Cruz mountain range, where we will learn about the significance of Mt. Umunhum to the Ohlone community and visit their Ceremonial Circle, and the historic importance of the Radar Tower that was once part of our missile defense system. Next, hikers will enjoy the panoramic views from nearly 3,500 feet above the valley floor and a social picnic lunch. Last but not least, it is time to explore more of the park by journeying down the three mile, mostly shady and cool Mt. Umunhum trail through varied habitats including coast live oak, foothill pine, California bay, interspersed with Pacific madrone and finally shrubs such as chamise, big berry manzanita, birch leafed mountain mahogany. Of course, along the way there are striking views of the valley, ridgelines and neighboring peaks.
