By law, the District is required to notice the public regarding projects that meet California Environmental Quality Act standard for public notification. The District also notifies the public about meetings where the public can learn and comment on projects or items of District Business.

Foothills Park Mountain Lion “Attack” Report Not Substantiated
City of Palo Alto Reopens Foothills Park and Arastradero Nature Preserve

Effective Wednesday, July 16 at 8:00 a.m., the City of Palo Alto reopened Foothills Park and the Arastradero Nature Preserve after both had been temporarily closed following a reported mountain lion "attack" in Foothills Park on Saturday, July 12.

Police and the California Department of Fish and Game completed an in-depth investigation and determined that no evidence was found to substantiate a man’s report of a mountain lion attack.

The District reopened Los Trancos Open Space Preserve, Foothills Open Space Preserve, and the Black Mountain Campground to public use yesterday.

California Fish and Game Cancels Mountain Lion Search; District Reopens Select Preserves

Due to inconclusive and unsubstantiated information, the California Department of Fish and Game announced late yesterday it was cancelling the search for a mountain lion that was reported to have attacked an individual in Palo Alto Foothills Park. As such, the District is reopening Los Trancos Open Space Preserve, Foothills Open Space Preserve, and the Black Mountain Campground to public use. Signage warning the public of the possible mountain lion sighting in the area will remain in the Preserves around Palo Alto Foothills Park at all District staging areas.

We will follow the situation closely for further action.

Palo Alto Mountain Lion Incident Prompts Temporary Preserve and Facility Closures

In response to the mountain lion incident at the City of Palo Alto’s Foothills Park on Saturday, July 12, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD) has closed certain preserves and facilities as a precautionary measure. MROSD is working closely with staff from Foothills Park and the California Department of Fish and Game and will re-open preserves and facilities as soon as can be safely done.

Controlled Burn Planned for Sierra Azul Open Space – Rancho de Guadalupe Area -- CANCELLED

A controlled burn is scheduled to take place on approximately nine acres of land in the Rancho de Guadalupe area of the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve on Thursday, June 26, 2008. The nearest public roadway is Hicks Road (see map below). The burn is part of the training which is being provided to local agencies in preparation for the summer fire season.

Public meeting on the Purchase of Mindego Ranch

The Board of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District will hold a special meeting Tuesday, March 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. The meeting will be held at the District's Skyline Field Office, 21150 Skyline Boulevard, to honor a commitment that actions concerning Coastside properties would be held on the Coastside.

Mitigated Negative Declaration: POST Mindego Ranch Property

The comment period for this project closed March 15, 2008. Oral comments may be made at the March 25, 2008 Board Meeting.

The proposed project consists of the purchase of the 1,047-acre POST Mindego Ranch property by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, including the assignment of existing lease, landfill removal agreement, and escrow agreement, and the concurrent adoption of a Preliminary Use and Management Plan that prescribes a status quo approach to the continued use and management of the property for livestock grazing and open space purposes. Mitigated Negative Declaration: Tree Farm Restoration Project

A notice, pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970, as amended (Public Resources Code 21,000,et seq.) that the following project: Skyline Ridge Tree Farm Restoration Project, when implemented, will not have a significant impact on the environment.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD) is planning to restore approximately 8 acres of an abandoned Christmas tree farm to natural grassland and woodland habitat. In addition to the removal of non-native trees, the goals of the restoration project are to reduce erosion and sediment transport into Horseshoe Lake, correct unnatural drainage patterns, and address stream channel degradation.

The Board of Directors holds its official meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. These meetings are open to the public and input is always welcome.
