Geocaching Guidelines

For a Safe, Enjoyable Visit and the Protection of the Environment...

The recreational activity of Geocaching can be a stimulating way to spend your time outdoors. The District welcomes you to enjoy geocaching within the preserves in a responsible manner. Please read the District’s Geocaching Guidelines in its entirety before heading out on your next Geocaching adventure. Visitors are responsible for knowing and obeying these guidelines to help to ensure a safe, enjoyable visit.

What is Geocaching?

The term Geocaching is the combination of “Geo” for geology and “caching” for the act of hiding a cache. Traditionally, a cache is a hiding place used to store or conceal items and more recently due to technology, it refers to memory cache, which is a type of computer memory storage.

The recreational activity of Geocaching is an adventure or game wherein an organization or individual hides a cache and posts the coordinates of that cache’s location online for others to find using a Global Positioning (GPS) unit. The cache typically consists of a small container that holds a logbook for visitors to sign or leave notes in. Often times, small items are placed in the cache for amusement or to be taken and replaced by other items.

What are the District’s policies regarding Geocaching? Is a permit required to place or search for a cache?

A permit is not required to place or search for a cache, however all Geocachers placing caches on District lands must be registered users with www.geocaching.com and must comply with the guidelines established by the District as well as those established by Geocaching.com. Anyone placing or searching for a cache must do so during normal preserve hours and must follow the procedures as outlined in the District’s Geogaching Guidelines.

How does the District monitor Geocaching on District lands?

Members of the group “Geocachers of the Bay Area” will work together with an assigned staff member from the District’s Public Affairs Department to ensure that Geocaching activities taking place on District lands are done so within the established guidelines.
