Virtual Field Trips
Activity 1: Notes on Habitat
Join Midpen Environmental Education Specialist Nina Vuoso on a Virtual Field Trip around Alpine Pond. Learn about habitats, making nature observations, and taking notes outside. Then, take your nature observation skills on a walk around your habitat: your neighborhood!
Watch the video, and download the Student Nature Notebook, also available in Spanish. In this activity, with support from an adult, students will plan and carry out a Field Trip at home. This activity is designed for students grades 3-5, but some parts can be modified for grades K-2 with ample adult support and supervision. More tips for teachers can be found in the Teacher’s Guide.
Activity 2: Ecosystem Explorers
Join Nina Vuoso from Midpen and Charlie Onorati from Save the Bay on a Virtual Field Trip comparing the ecosystems of Alpine Pond and the nearby shoreline of the San Francisco Bay. Watch the video and follow along by making your own observations of the bay lands using Save the Bay’s Ecosystem Explorer guide. Learn about the different components of an ecosystem, how they relate to each other, and how they can change. Then, make observations of the ecosystems near where you live.
